'Addams Family' in Chicago: Family classic aims to stay true to the cartoon

On a staircase in Chicago's Oriental Theatre, the suave actress Bebe Neuwirth glides past a poster for her own show. The central image is a family portrait of a weird-but-familiar group, as precisely and avuncularly drawn by the late Charles Addams. In the center, goofy Gomez grins his eager, toothy grin. On the left, Fester's eyes pop out of his creepy round skull. At the bottom, Pugsley tries to look innocent but ends up impersonating a young convict. Meanwhile, Wednesday, the original 'tween Goth, evokes a blank, perfectly symmetrical slate.

Forgettable music. Really cliche story. Nathan Lane was a hog. New York Times review is entirely accurate. It was kind of entertaining but it put the Family to shame.

I have never laughed so much in my life. This play was absolutely wonderful. Nathan Lane is fabulous. I was nervous about this play. I had read negative things about it and almost did not purchase tickets. I have no idea why anyone would have anything negative to say about the play. I would def see it again.

No catchy songs, no impressive dance scenes and no special effects made for a disappointing show. My least favorite musical I have seen so far.

Heather
7/7/10

We had low expectations going in to the show because of the reviews, but we LOVED it. The sets and ensemble cast were amazing. We see a lot of shows on Broadway and we had just as much fun at this show as any other. We were especially impressed with Krysta Rodriguez, she is going to be the next big deal on Broadway!

THIS YEARS MUST-SEE-MUSICAL! Despite what any critics may say, The Addams Family will have you leaving the theatre with a huge smile, and a greater appreciation for the darkness. This new Broadway production is clever, witty, and keeps you laughing from start to finish. For a great night of classic musical theatre, toe-tapping songs, and just plain fun, The Addams Family is a winner. . . by a SNAP!

I saw the show the first week it opened and was in shock! It is the BEST musical I have ever seen in my whole life! I've always wanted to be on broadway and now my dream role is Wednesday! I have been counting down the days until the CD comes out since the moment the show was over! If you haven't seen it, you MUST!

5/25/10

An absolute treat for the senses. Nathan and Bebe were amazing. Their tango stopped the show! The rest of the family, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Uncle Fester were a laugh riot. The music was great and the cameos of Cousin It and Thing were a crowd favorite. Thank you all for making us laugh at a time when we deperately need it!

Michelle
5/19/10

I saw the opening on Broadway. It was amazing! I would recommend it to everyone. It was so funny. Nathan Lane was hilarious and Bebe Neuwirth fit the role perfectly. Wednesday and Grandma stole the show on several occasions and Uncle Fester had some magical moments with the ancestors. The songs are memorable and catchy; I can not wait to get a copy of the album when it comes out.

Kellen
5/17/10

I haven't seen such a good show since Wicked. The two shows are now my favorites. There was nothing about the show that was not top quality. The music and sets were beyond amazing. I could see this show over and over. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE CRITICS!!!! SEE IT! Oh and Nathan and Bebe were amazing of course, BUT Krysta vibrated the theatre with her amazing voice. Yes people see it, you wont regret it.

in celebration of my friend's "milestone" birthday, we saw this fabulous show with family members in tow. As a serious theatre-maven who sees shows all the time, I must take exception to the so-called professional reviewers who found fault w/this delightful production...were they at the same show we were? What the heck? A word of advice to you critics out there, lighten up and quit over-analyzing something that does not require analysis...it's a musical-comedy for pete's sake!! Best offering currently on Broadway....5 stars from our group!

Liz
5/16/10

Absolutely fantastic! Lane was great--he makes you laugh at the smallest joke and was very suave, perfect for the role of Gomez. The whole cast really was amazing though. A must see! Would die to see it again! And for the set, it was BRILLIANT! The songs were very catchy and well sung, I wish I would've reserved my name for the recording. Overall, fabulous!

5/12/10

It was one of the best musicals i have seen in a while. The Music, the acting, and stageing was just amazing. i saw it on mothers day with a whole bunch of people and we all thought it was amazing. It was one of the best shows i have seen in a while(:

Laura
5/11/10

I'm sorry to say my husband, three teenage kids and myself found it very disappointing. It really was not funny, most lines and the story were very predictable. The first act was better than the second. Grandma was just annoying after awhile Broadway tickets are way too expensive to be disappointed with such great leads ($750)!

Greg
5/10/10

Saw the matinee on Saturday 5/8. One word...H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! I haven't laughed so hard at the theatre in a long time! The music was catchy and the sets were stunning! As for the cast...it was an honor to be in the same room as Nathan and Bebe (and to witness their spot on interpretations of Gomez and Morticia), but the rest of the cast was stellar as well! Don't listen to the critics (I'm talking about you Mr. Brantley) and other naysayers...this show's gonna run for quite some time!

Elaine
5/10/10

Fabulous!!! everyone in the cast was wonderful! Nathan Lane is always great!! loved the show and enjoyed Bebe Neuwirth's Morticia.

The Addams Family is an amazing show! The whole cast is great, but the standouts are of course Nathan and Bebe, Krysta Rodriguez, Jackie Hoffman, and Kevin Chamberlin. The whole production is great!

5/9/10

I loved it! I saw the show last week and Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane were fantastic and I'm still singing the songs. I can't believe that I saw two of Broadway's finest actors on the same stage!

Garrett M
5/9/10

I went to see this show with my school show chior and it was the FUNNIEST thing I had ever seen on stage or screen. The talent was overwhelmingly amazing from everyone. Krysta Rodriguez is, in my opinion, one of the brightest stars on the broadway stage. I almost constantly sing the songs in my head and it has been a month since I have seen the show. I can't wait til I return to New York and see this show again!!!

See title. Read NYT review. Pretty much sums it all up. Sad state of affairs.

Jake
5/8/10

I saw the chicago version and now the broadway version...i miss some of the songs they took out but the ones that have replaced them are amazing...Bebe Neuwirth made the show for me, amazing performance, as well as Nathan Lane! absolutley love this show, i was scared it would be bad, because The Addams Family has such a history and is very iconic, but they did more than justice for them!

Georgia
5/8/10

I had the privilege of seeing this show in Chicago, and it was incredible. The music and side splitting humor was fantastic, the fabulous cast was just a bonus!

Mark
5/6/10

This show was amazing! I loved Zachary James as Lurch. You have to see this show!

Matt
5/5/10

I Saw It in Chicago and it was the best show ever! I would see it everyday if I had the chance!!!

Joe
5/5/10

It's AMAZING!! SEE IT NOW!! If there is one thing you do in NYC, it should be to see this amazing musical! The music is AMAZING!

Samantha
5/4/10

I saw it with my cousin on the first night of the preview for it and it was so good! First trip to NYC and my first Broadway show...amazing! Laughed the whole show and was amazed by Krysta's beautiful voice. We got autographs/pictures after the show...even Nathan's!

Kathryn Padalino
5/3/10

We saw the show twice and loved it. It's funny, witty and they have suprisingly managed to make them just like every other family... just a bit more kooky!

Bev
5/3/10

We were wonderfully entertained by great performances by the entire cast. After the bad review in the Times we weren't expecting a lot, but we were dilightfully surprised by a strong show. Bravo!!

Bad, bad, bad
5/2/10

Undeniably the worst play I have ever seen. No music, plot, or set that elicited any thrill that a Broadway musical is bred to instill.

Doug
5/2/10

And can we talk about the score?! Andrew Lippa has given us a melodic, rich, funny ("the mist inside the word mystique"!) and original score. Bravo!

Marco
5/2/10

I loved "The Addams Family!" Favorite songs: "One Normal Night" and "Happy Sad." Oh, and I loved Gomez and Morticia's tango. It stopped the show the night I was there.

Lynn
5/2/10

This is one funny show! The puppets, costumes and even the curtain were a visual treat. Thank you, thing!

Eve
5/2/10

Great uncomplicated fun night at the theatre! Mr. Lane and Ms. Neuwirth were great. However I thought Ms. Hoffman stole the show!

Caity
5/2/10

I've been lucky enough to have had the show do its pre-broadway run here at home in Chicago, and then get to see its NYC incarnation as well. I've loved it every time. There's no show that makes me laugh more, and no show with a more divine cast. And puppets! You really can't lose :)

Brooklyn
5/2/10

Absolutely incredible. The singing was outstanding and the effects were brilliant. Halfway through I decided it was my new favorite show :)

Carl
5/2/10

I thought the show was absolutely astonishing! Who cares what some bad reviews say! The crowd was laughing all night! I'd like to point out Adam Riegler as Pugsley! He was great. What a voice! And so friendly to the public after. Nathan Lane was hilarious as well as Jackie Hoffman and Kevin Chamberlin. Krysta Rodrigez was also a pleasure to watch. Oh, and Carolee Carmello, was hilarious. Lighting up the stage with her comedy and delightful and rich voice. Overall, The Addams family deserves a "Well Done" from Carl Brennan.

Elise
5/2/10

It was INCREDIBLE! Such a great new show! I have been following The Addams Family since the readings began and being able to see it was a great exprerence I will never forget! Everything was grade A talent- the singing, the dancing, the new songs, not to mention the puppetry. It all was simply perfect!

John Patrick
5/1/10

This show is now my favorite musical!! Mr. Lippa's score is fantastic and the set is phenomenal! Nathan and Bebe are nothing short of perfect and the entire cast blazes with charisma! If you are in NYC for just a few hours or even a week, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS SHOW!

Molly
4/30/10

I really liked it! I felt that the first act was stronger than the second act, but I was really entertained throughout the entire show. My husband and I watched the show when we were kids, so it was really cool to see those characters live in front of us! I am definitely recommending it to my friends and their kids.

Great Show

Everything about this show is top-rate. The music, acting, sets and costumes were just perfect. I know I will see this show over and over again. If you are a fan of the TV show or the movies you will absolutely love this!

This was my favorite show during my recent stay in New York. So fortunate to have watched this show with the Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. They were hilarious, as was the entire cast. An unforgettable experience!
