On a staircase in Chicago's Oriental Theatre, the suave actress Bebe Neuwirth glides past a poster for her own show. The central image is a family portrait of a weird-but-familiar group, as precisely and avuncularly drawn by the late Charles Addams. In the center, goofy Gomez grins his eager, toothy grin. On the left, Fester's eyes pop out of his creepy round skull. At the bottom, Pugsley tries to look innocent but ends up impersonating a young convict. Meanwhile, Wednesday, the original 'tween Goth, evokes a blank, perfectly symmetrical slate.

Surely the decision took all of two seconds: Whom to cast as Morticia in the new musical The Addams Family? Who else but pale, raven-haired, two-time Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth? The musical-theater vet stars opposite Nathan Lane in the musical based on the Charles Addams cartoons, which, after premiering in Chicago, will make its Broadway debut in March. In a news release on Wednesday, publicists for “The Addams Family,” the coming musical based on the macabre Charles Addams cartoons, said the show would begin previews there on March 4, with an official opening of April 8, following an out-of-town run at Chicago’s Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theater.
